Comparing no contract broadband plans

Month-to-Month & No-Contract Internet Deals

Updated on

Life is unpredictable, and no one wants to be stuck paying out a year, or longer, for broadband service that they might not be happy with. Thankfully, more and more no-contract broadband plans are becoming increasingly available. If you don’t want to get yourself locked into a broadband contract and want to see what internet offers are available on a monthly basis, you can compare available broadband plans below.

What is No Contract Broadband?

It used to be the case that you had to sign away your life for six months, one year, or even 24 months when signing up for a home broadband plan and if you weren’t happy with your service, for whatever reason? Too bad. You had to pay hefty fees in order to get out of your contract.

These days that isn’t always the case as more and more ISPs offer no-contract broadband plans. No contract broadband plans give you the freedom to leave your current plan or internet provider at any time to find a better plan, without needing to worry about paying a penalty fee.

So, is it a wise idea to switch to a no-contract broadband plan? That really depends on what you’re looking for. When it comes to no-contract internet plans, you might need to pay more for setup fees or upfront modem costs which might otherwise have been waived if you signed up for a contracted broadband plan. However, the ability to switch plans and providers freely, particularly if you already have a compatible modem you can bring with you, means you might not even need to pay more than your monthly internet bill.

Pros of no-contract internet plans

  • Freedom and flexibility to switch ISPs.
  • Good for renters and people who frequently move.
  • BYO modem means avoid paying an extra $100+ upfront.

Cons of no-contract internet plans

  • Usually involve higher start-up costs.
  • Might have to purchase a new modem outright.
  • Some providers advertise “no contract” but you still need to pay for your modem if you cancel.

No Contract Internet Providers

While no contract broadband providers were once few and far between, this is no longer the case. Many internet providers now offer no-contract home broadband, many of which are listed here.

No Contract NBN Plans with Unlimited Data

As the National Broadband Network gets cheaper, more and more broadband providers are doing away with data-capped broadband plans, including no-contract NBN plans. Below, you can compare NBN plans with no contract with unlimited data for each NBN speed tier, along with the cost of the NBN plan, and any additional fees you might need to pay upfront, such as setup or for a modem, or if you can bring your own modem.

No Contract NBN12

NBN12, or Basic NBN, is becoming increasingly uncommon as the cost of NBN technology decreases and more people opt for faster download speeds. NBN12 is the lowest speed tier in the National Broadband Network, with maximum speeds of 12Mbps. If you’re not a heavy internet user, and just want to do some light browsing and checking your email while keeping your monthly broadband budget low, then NBN12 is the speed for you.

No Contract NBN25

Standard NBN, or NBN25, gives you a maximum of 25Mbps download speed. This is good for those who want to stream videos in standard quality and do some browsing on social media, but probably won’t be fast enough for households with three or more people who might use the internet at the same time. Below, you can find internet providers who offer NBN25 plans, without a lock-in contract.

No Contract NBN100

If you’re big into online gaming, high-quality streaming, or have four or more people using the internet at once across different devices then NBN100, or NBN Premium, is the NBN speed for your household. With maximum download speeds of 100Mbps, NBN100 can handle most heavy internet use. Below you will find internet providers who have NBN100 plans available with no contract.

No Contract NBN Superfast and Ultrafast

NBN Superfast and Ultrafast are the newest, and fastest, NBN plans available for certain connections. If you have a Fibre-to-the-Node (FTTN) or a Hybrid Fibre Coaxial connection, then you may have these speeds available. NBN Superfast and Ultrafast reach download speeds of over 200Mbps, and oftentimes quite more than 200Mbps, meaning you will probably never need to wait for your browser to load or your online game to finish buffering.

No Contract Home Wireless Internet

Home wireless internet is a great way to get the internet in your home without the National Broadband Network. Rather, home wireless internet connects your home devices to the same mobile broadband as your phone. While 4G home wireless broadband is still the most common, the rollout of 5G means even faster home wireless broadband will become increasingly common.

4G No Contract Home Wireless Broadband

4G home wireless broadband connects your home to the same 4G mobile broadband your smartphone connects to. 4G home wireless broadband doesn’t offer the fastest download speeds (about 20Mbps) and often comes with data caps, making it unsuitable for heavy internet households. However, if you’re a light internet user, and don’t want to connect to the NBN (or don’t yet have a connection) then 4G home wireless broadband might be a good alternative.

5G No Contract Home Wireless Broadband

With 5G slowly getting rolled out across Australia, 5G home wireless broadband is becoming more available. With speeds just as fast, if not faster, than most NBN plans and unlimited data, 5G home wireless really is the alternative to the National Broadband Network. Below you can find the three available 5G home wireless broadband plans, through Optus and SpinTel, but it’s always a good idea to check and see if 5G is available in your area before signing up.
