Boost Mobile offers affordable prepaid mobile phone plans on Australia's most reliable network, but is Boost Mobile worth it? In this guide, we cover all the important factors to know about Boost prepaid plans, Boost network coverage, customer reviews and more. Read on to get the full scoop on Boost Mobile Australia.
Boost Mobile Network Coverage
Boost Mobile offers great network coverage thanks to its use of the Telstra mobile network!
Boost Australia is only 1 of 2 phone companies that has full access to the Telstra Network which is also Australia’s most expansive mobile network.
Boost prepaid plans offer 3G & 4G coverage to over 98% of the Australian population and 2.6million square kilometres (1km more than all other providers) thanks to the Telstra mobile network. Boost Mobile's 4G network covers major cities, while its 3G service covers most regional areas. Telstra is also working to roll out their 5G network across major cities.
What does all of this mean?
Basically, you can expect all the same amazing coverage with Boost Mobile that you would from Telstra. Even if you live in a rural area or enjoy the wilderness, you will have great access to phone coverage.
We know that Boost Mobile network coverage is great, so what about the price?

Boost Prepaid Plans & Prices
- All Boost prepaid plans include:
- No lock-in Contracts
- Full Telstra Mobile Network access
- You can keep your original number
- Unlimited nationwide standard calls and text
- Free nationwide shipping for your Boost SIM card
Plans come in 2 forms: 28-day expiry & 12-month expiry.
The difference between the 12-month plans and the 28-day plans is that with the 12-month option you receive all your data at once and get to choose how much you use each month until the 12-month expiry period has ended. In other words, your data won't run out at the end of the month, and you won't have to top up each month, but you will have to manage your usage over a year's time.

Boost Mobile's long expiry or 12-month recharge plans are great for people who prefer to pay for everything upfront. This type of plan is great for people who travel or use their phones irregularly. If you use lots of data one month and hardly any, the next, you can spread it all out over the year and use as much as you like whenever it suits you best.
The other obvious benefit of paying a lump sum is that it does work out to give you a small discount vs paying for the same data on a monthly plan. With a 28-day expiry, you will end up paying for about 14 plans over the course of a year.
These SIM-only plans also include unlimited standard calling, as well as call and text internationally to a number of selected countries across the globe.

Now that you have seen what Boost Mobile phone plans are available, here is quick comparison between Boost Mobile and Telstra plans.
Boost Mobile Phone Plans vs. Telstra Mobile Plans
So, we already established that Boost Mobile basically gives you full Telstra network access without the hefty price tag you would find at a top-teir provider – but how much cheaper is Boost than Telstra?
At the time of writing, Boost Mobile phone plans came in at around 25% cheaper than Telstra mobile phone plans. This number will, of course, depend on the plan you choose, but in our example, we found Boost Mobile offered 40GB for $30 while Telstra offered a nearly identical plan for $10 more for a total of $40.
Basically, Boost offers the same network coverage for a bit cheaper, but don't expect to get all the add-ons and inclusions you would with a Telstra Mobile plan.
So, Boost Mobile's network coverage is great and the plans are cheap –but what are the advantages and drawbacks of choosing the company?
Let's have a look.
Boost Mobile Reviews: Pros & Cons
- PROS
- Full Telstra 4G network
- Lots of plans to choose from
- Flexibility if you aren't sure what you want
- Plans are cheaper than other major providers
- Lots of extra inclusions like international calling
- CONS
- No international roaming
- Porting an existing number takes several days
- Poor customer service
- Plans favour new sign-ups over existing customers
- Most prepaid plans offer bonus data but only for the first 3 recharges
You can see from the list above that people have trouble with keeping their existing number, dealing with Boost Mobile's customer service, and the fact that customer benefits only last for a few months after sign-up.
What Does Boost Mobile Do Well?
Boost is a great choice for a relatively inexpensive plan on Australia's best mobile network.
Boost Mobile phone plans are great for people who live out in rural areas or who enjoy spending time in the wilderness because the mobile network coverage is unbeatable. Boost also has a large range of plans that allow you to tailor your service to what fits you best.
If you have friends or families overseas, you don’t have to skip out on good mobile coverage to get a plan that allows international calling because Boost offers both.
With all that said, it is important to note that Boost isn't the cheapest mobile phone provider out there, but for what you get in terms of price, data allowance, and network coverage, Boost is a strong choice.
We think that Boost is a great option for people who like simple plans, like students, seniors, or kids getting their first phone plan, but enough about what we think. Let's have a look at what real Boost customers have to say.
Boost Mobile Reviews.
- Here is how customers have reviewed Boost Mobile across the web:
- ProductReview: 2 stars out of 5
- Trustpilot: 2 stars out of 5
- Reviews.org: 3.5 stars out orf 5
Across the web, Boost Mobile reviews are mixed.
Customers like the service once they are activated and appreciate that Boost Mobile uses the Telstra Network to provide prepaid options to Australian customers.
However, many customers cite trouble receiving their Boost SIM card, and mention that it arrives several days late. We also saw most of the negative reviews pertained to porting your number from your old company. Time and time again, customers mentioned this process taking days on end and trouble getting help from Boost customer support to resolve the issue.
We saw the same trend with customers who decided to request a refund saying that they had to chase after customer service to get their money returned.
Obviously, these reviews aren't very favourable, but if you are someone who isn't in a hurry, and are fine getting a new number, then these negative Boost Mobile reviews shouldn't phase you.
As always, we recommend you do your own research before making a decision.
Requesting a Boost SIM Card & How to Activate Boost SIM Cards
You can purchase a Boost SIM card or a refurbished phone online on boostmobile.com.au. Boost will ship your SIM card free of charge to any destination in Australia.
Once you’ve received your Boost SIM card in the mail, you'll need to activate the Boost SIM card online. When activating a Boost SIM card, you will need the SIM serial or service number and a valid form of identification.
Your Boost SIM should be activated within 4 and 24 hours if requested during business hours. However, if you request an activation outside of business hours (Sundays and public holidays included) the request will be processed next business day. If you are porting your number from a previous service, you will be able to continue to use your number until the activation is complete.
When signing up, as per Australian law, customers have to agree that they own less than five prepaid devices and this device will only be for personal use.
Porting a Telstra number? If you’re moving your number from Telstra to Boost Mobile you will need to contact 1800 100 933 between 8am and 9pm, any day of the week to request a blank Boost SIM card (next day delivery for customers in any major capital city if the request is made before 4PM). Once you receive your blank Boost SIM, call the same number (1800 100 933) to activate it.
Boost Recharge Online & On Your Phone
There are 4 different ways to process a Boost Mobile rechage:
- Recharge on the Boost Mobile app (Andriod or iPhone)
- Recharge by dialling #111# from your Boost Mobile phone
- Recharge Online at boostmobile.com.au
- Auto recharge through any of the above-mentioned methods and selecting “auto recharge” with your payment details
Anothing important point note is that if you pay for a Boost recharge online using your phone's mobile browser, it doesn't use any of your data.
In other words, even if your data has run out, you can still go online to boostmobile.com to recharge your SIM and it will work without data.
