The best way to save money on your gas or electricity bills is to compare and switch every 12 to 18 months. When comparing energy plans, it's important to remember that there is no one-size-fits-all plan to save money. Prices vary depending on your location and usage so always compare energy prices using your own details to find the best plan for your home.
To compare energy providers, you will need to know your annual energy consumption, and current tariff and/or energy plan. This information can be found on your utility bill. If you’re unsure of your current energy tariff or usage, you can find more information on Selectra’s Average Electricity Bill guide.
Once you’ve compared energy prices and chosen the one that best suits your household, it’s time to switch energy providers. To switch providers, you can directly contact your chosen provider or give one of our friendly Energy Experts a call.
When setting up a new energy account, you should have the following details ready to make the switch as fast as possible:
Switching energy providers should take about 20 minutes to complete the switch over the phone. Once switched, you will always have a 10-day cooling-off period in the event that you change your mind.
Once your cooling off period is over your previous energy provider will give you your final meter reading. This can be a special meter reading, which may cost extra, or wait until your energy provider reads your meter. If you have a smart meter, this can be done remotely.
The Reference Price (also known as the Default Market Offer or DMO, or Victorian Default Offer or VDO) is a benchmark for electricity prices set by the government used to assist those who wish to engage in the energy market and protect those who do not.
For Australians who want to compare and switch energy providers, the DMO can be used to compare plans across a variety of providers to find the best deals. For Australians who do not wish to engage with the energy market, the DMO is used to protect those consumers from rising energy prices. You can find more information about the Reference Price in our guide.
