As stated, Queensland is divided into two distinct regions when it comes to the energy market. For those living in Brisbane and the surrounding area, full retail contestability has been implemented, allowing residents to choose their energy provider.
However, for those in regional and rural Queensland, electricity is provided and supplied through Ergon Energy.
See all Energy Providers in Queensland
Ergon Energy is the historic energy provider in Queensland, and still the only provider and distributor available to residents living outside of South-East Queensland. Ergon Energy’s rates are set by the Queensland government, to keep rising electricity prices manageable for the residents of the area.
Since Ergon Energy isn’t only the historic energy provider, but also the supplier, meaning they are who you call for any power outage, electricity emergency, or other problems with the supply of energy to your home.
Queensland energy customers have their energy supplied to them by two electricity distributors and two gas distributors.
As stated, those in the regional and rural areas of the state live within the Ergon Energy distribution network for electricity while those in South-East Queensland have their electricity distributed to them through Energex. For natural gas customers, Allgas Energy and Australian Gas Network QLD supply the state.
If you’re experiencing an electric or gas emergency such as the smell of gas, outage, or fallen lines, you’re going to need to call your energy supplier as they are the ones who maintain and repair the electricity grid and gas supply.

If you’re experiencing financial hardship, or having trouble keeping up with your energy bills, the Queensland government offers rebates and concessions for electricity and gas. While eligibility might differ between rebates and concessions, if you’re experiencing financial difficulties, it’s best to first contact your energy provider to discuss your options.
Queensland pensioners and seniors have two energy rebates available to help with the cost of electricity and gas bills.

Currently, the Queensland government itself does not offer any solar rebates.
However, if you’re interested in investing in solar energy, there are a few schemes available in Australia to help offset the cost of installing solar panels onto your home.
The Home Energy Emergency Assistance Scheme is a one-off emergency payment to assist Queensland households experiencing a sudden, short-term, financial crisis and need help paying their energy bills. It’s a one-off payment of up to $720 every two years.
To be eligible for this emergency assistance payment, you must be the one responsible for paying the outstanding bill, though the bill doesn’t need to be in your name. In addition, you must meet the following:

If you have, or want to invest in, solar energy for your home it's important to consider the solar feed-in tariff with your energy plan.
When your solar PV system generates electricity, most of that is used to power your home. Any excess, however, is usually sent back to the grid (unless you have battery storage). Your electricity provider will usually pay you for the energy sent back, known as the solar feed-in tariff or FiT, which comes in the form of a credit off your energy bills.
It may be necessary to have a smart meter installed in order to receive a feed-in tariff.
If you live in regional Queensland, within the Ergon Energy distribution network, there is a minimum flat-rate feed-in tariff of 9.369c/kWh which is set by the government. Those who live in South East Queensland, Brisbane, or the other areas within the Energex distribution network, will usually find a voluntary feed-in tariff of around 10c/kWh though some retailers might offer even higher.
Here you will find the highest solar feed-in tariffs available in Brisbane as of October 2024. Some solar feed-in tariffs have eligibility requirements in order to access the higher rates. Depending on your energy plan and size of solar PV system, you might be better off choosing a lower FiT with a higher discount.
Provider | Minimum FiT (c/kWh) | Maximum FiT (c/kWh) |
---|---|---|
Origin Energy | 5c | 20c Solar panels must be purchased through Origin Energy |
EnergyAustralia | 6.6c | 15c/kWh on the ReAmped Solar Plan |
Ovo Energy | 7c | 14c |
AGL | 5c | 12c |
GloBird Energy | 5c | 11c |
*Must have solar & battery storage for enhanced FiT. Some eligibility requirements might be necessary and not available to everyone. Valid October 2024.
If you’re experiencing an energy emergency, such as a power outage, the smell of gas, fallen wires, or shocks and tingles, you will need to call your energy distributor’s emergency number. Your energy distributor is the one in charge of maintaining the energy supply, fixing outages and other issues, and actually getting the energy supply to your home.
There are two electricity distributors and two gas distributors in Queensland. If you’re unsure who your distributor is, you can find out on your most recent energy bill.
