AGL Moving House Guide: New Connections and Disconnections

Whether you’re a new or existing AGL customer, you can easily organize your move with AGL’s moving team, and set up your connections and disconnections online. With as little as one business day’s notice, you’ll get electricity connected to your new property with AGL’s Power On guarantee, and have gas connected to your home in three business days. To make your next move as pain-free as possible, continue reading below for all the information you need when moving house with AGL.

AGL Power On guarantee If you give AGL one business day's notice with clear and safe meter access, you’re guaranteed to have your power on the day you move in. If not, AGL will cover your related expenses up to $250 per day, until your home is connected.

The process for signing up to AGL for your new home, and signing up for your existing home, are more or less the same. Choose the best AGL plan for you, using your new address when comparing, and select the plan you want.

When signing up for AGL you will need to provide an email address, valid form of ID (either a driver’s license, Medicare card, or passport) and let AGL know when you’re planning to move into your new home. During the signup process, you will also have the opportunity to supply your concession card details, and billing and payment preferences.

Disconnecting my current address when moving house with AGL

Your electricity and gas don’t automatically disconnect from your previous property when you move house and you need to call and arrange a disconnection and final meter reading with your energy provider. If this is AGL, you can call them at any time by dialling 13 12 45 or using AGL’s 24/7 Live Chat. If you have a different energy provider, you’ll need to contact them directly to disconnect your power from your current address.

When disconnecting power from your current address, your energy distributor will need around three business days notice. It’s best to organize the disconnection the day after you move, because electricity can be disconnected as early as 7am on the day you choose.

AGL connection and disconnection fees

AGL connection and disconnection fees vary, depending on whether you need gas or electricity connected, the state you live, and your energy distributor. AGL doesn’t set these moving fees, they’re set by your energy distributor and AGL merely passes the cost onto you.

AGL new connections

If you have a new build, or need a new connection for electricity or gas, you’ll need to organize a new connection with AGL. This is not the same as a home you’re moving into that has an existing connection, and requires a little extra paperwork. You can request a new connection online, using AGL’s electricity and gas connection application. If you’re requesting a new connection on behalf of someone else, you’ll need to make sure you’re authorized to make that request on their behalf.

Confused by the AGL new connections process? Call AGL at 1800 680 430 or send the AGL New Connections team an email at aglnewconns@agl.com.au for help or to check the status of your application.

AGL moving house FAQ

What do I need to do to get power connected to my new property?

When organizing a connection with AGL at your new address, make sure your main electrical switch is turned off for safe connection. If you don’t have access to your new property, your real estate agent can make sure the switch is turned off for you.

If you live in Queensland, you will need to make sure you are at your new property when getting your power connected, for a Visual Safety Inspection, otherwise you usually don’t need to be present for the actual connection as long as there is safe and clear access to the meter and the main switch is turned off.

How long does it take for AGL to connect my new property?

AGL needs one business day (before 1pm) for electricity and three business days for gas connections to your new property.

How can I track my connection to my new property?

Once you’ve organized your move (as an existing customer) through your AGL My Account, you’ll be send a confirmation email with a reference number and link to your move tracker online, which can also be found on your My Account, under “Track my move”.

I moved and I don’t have power!

First, make sure you turn the main switch back to “on” once you move into your new home. If you arranged for your connection at your new address, but still don’t have power, contact AGL for help. If you didn’t arrange your move with AGL yet, call them or start the process online to get power connected as quickly as possible.
