AGL moving house

No matter if you’re a new customer or have been one for years, you can organise your move with AGL online in a few simple steps. Whether you’re looking for information about how to move house with AGL, need an AGL connection at a new build, or want to know how to organise an AGL gas disconnection, you can out more in our AGL Moving House guide below.

AGL Moving House: Step by Step Guide

The process of moving house with AGL is relatively similar, regardless of whether you’re a current AGL customer, or looking to set up a new energy connection with AGL when you move.

To move house with AGL as a new or existing customer:

Moving energy connection
  1. Head to the AGL Moving House Sign Up page. Log into AGL My Account if you’re already an AGL customer, or provide details about your new address if you’re not.
  2. Choose your AGL electricity and/or gas plan and compare AGL energy rates for your new address to make sure you’re getting the best deal.
  3. Arrange your AGL connection date. Existing customers can do this through AGL My Account while new customers will be given the option to choose their connection date during sign up.
  4. Organise your AGL energy disconnection at your current address. New AGL customers need to contact their current energy provider while current AGL customers will be able to choose their disconnection date when organising their move.
  5. Track your AGL connection using the reference number and link sent in your confirmation email or through AGL My Account.
  6. On the day of your AGL connection make sure there is clear access to the meter and your electrical switch is shut off at your new property.

AGL needs at least one business day to organise your electricity connection, and at least 3 business days for a gas connection when moving house.

Why not organise broadband in your new house? Get broadband at your new home by signing up for AGL Internet and get a $15/month discount when you bundle with an AGL energy plan.

AGL Disconnections

You need to remember to disconnect the energy supply from your current address when moving out.

If you’re an AGL customer moving out of your current address, you’ll be able to choose your disconnection date when you organise your AGL disconnection through AGL My Account.

If you’re switching energy providers, regardless of who it is, you will need to contact them directly to disconnect your current address. Remember that energy disconnections can occur anytime after 7am the day you choose, so it’s usually recommended you disconnect the energy supply the day after you move.

Disconnection fees may apply, depending on your energy distributor, meter type, and location and will be included in your final energy bill.

AGL New Connections

AGL new connections are for new builds and properties where there has never been an electricity or gas connection before and require a meter or service line, or for properties where you're installing solar.

The process for applying for a new AGL gas connection and AGL electricity connection is relatively similar, with a few key differences. If you’re moving into a new build that requires a new connection, you can find out more about AGL new connections below.

New AGL Gas Connections

There are three types of AGL gas connections you can apply for. Though the application for each type is the same process is the same, the time it takes to complete your AGL gas connection will vary.

Types of AGL gas connections you can apply for are:

  • A mains connection when there is no existing gas mains on the street of your new build
  • A service line installation to connect the gas mains to the gas meter
  • A meter only installation where you have an existing service line but no physical meter

To apply for an AGL gas connection at your new build:

  1. Submit your AGL Gas Connection application
  2. Wait for your energy distributor to process your application
  3. Have your AGL gas connection installed by your energy distributor
  4. Get notification your gas connection has been installed

Depending on the type of AGL gas connection you need to be installed, the construction can take up to 8 weeks to finish. When organising your move into a new build, it’s best to make sure you plan accordingly.

New AGL Electricity Connections

For new builds requiring an AGL electricity connection, new AGL meters can take up to 6 business days, and if it may disrupt a neighbour's energy supply might take even longer.

To get a new AGL electricity connection:

  1. Submit your new AGL electricity connection application on the New Connections Platform or download the AGL New Connections PDF and email it to [email protected].
  2. Wait for your electricity distributor to process your application.
  3. Get your installation date. On the day of your new AGL connection make sure there is clear and safe access to the property’s proposed meter location.
  4. Confirmation of your new AGL electricity connection and any connection fees or charges that might apply.

AGL Connection Fee for Moving House

energy meter

You may need to pay a fee when organising your AGL connection or disconnection when moving house.

Your energy distributor, not provider, is responsible for setting any fees associated with your meter or energy connection and AGL simply passes those fees onto you the customer. Unfortunately, these fees are usually an unavoidable cost of moving house.

The fees you need to pay will vary, depending on different factors such as:

  • The type of service or reading your meter needs (connection, disconnection, new meter, or special read)
  • Your location and energy distributor
  • Whether or not you have a smart meter for a remote meter reading
  • Whether this meter read is outside of normal hours
  • Whether it’s a gas or electricity connection

Your particular circumstances will affect how much you need to pay in fees for AGL connections and disconnections, though they can range from less than $12 to over $100, and if you have a smart meter that can be read remotely the fee might be waived altogether.

AGL Moving House FAQ

What do I need to do for an AGL connection at my new address?

When organizing a connection with AGL at your new address, make sure your main electrical switch is turned off for a safe connection. If you don’t have access to your new property, your real estate agent can make sure the switch is turned off for you.

If you live in Queensland, you will need to make sure you are at your new property when getting your power connected, for a Visual Safety Inspection, otherwise you usually don’t need to be present for the actual connection as long as there is safe and clear access to the meter and the main switch is turned off.

How long does it take for an AGL Connection at my new address

AGL needs one business day (before 1pm) for electricity and three business days for gas connections to your new property.

How can I track my AGL connection to my new property?

Once you’ve organized your move (as an existing customer) through your AGL My Account, you’ll be sent a confirmation email with a reference number and link to your move tracker online, which can also be found on your My Account, under “Track my move”.

I moved with AGL and I don’t have power!

First, make sure you turn the main switch back to “on” once you move into your new home. If you arranged for your connection at your new address, but still don’t have power, contact AGL for help. If you didn’t arrange your move with AGL yet, call them or start the process online to get power connected as quickly as possible.

How do I cancel my AGL account?

Cancelling your AGL account is pretty much the same process as disconnecting your current address and not arranging for an AGL connection at your new address. You can contact AGL directly, or go to My AGL to cancel your account.
