Cheap NBN 12 Plans

NBN 12 plans are often the cheapest NBN plans, but also the most basic.

Cheap NBN 12 plans can only reach speeds of 12Mbps, which isn’t good for more than basic online browsing, checking social media, and reading your emails across one or two devices. This isn’t much faster than the old ADSL broadband connections, and for people who like to stream or play videogames, NBN 12 probably won’t be enough.

You also need to remember when comparing cheap NBN 12 plans to check for data caps. While most broadband providers these days offer unlimited data across all NBN plans, some still offer NBN 12 with capped data at an even cheaper price.

Choosing a cheap NBN 12 plan, with or without unlimited data, really depends on your household’s internet habits. A small household of one or two people, who don’t really watch Netflix or use multiple devices, can save a bit on their monthly budget with a cheap NBN 12 plan though it’s important to note the next NBN speed tier, NBN 25, isn’t much more expensive and offers much faster internet speeds.

Below, you can find a summary of the cheapest NBN plans on the NBN 12 speed tier.

What to Consider When Comparing Cheap NBN Plans

There’s more to choosing cheap NBN plans than just price. This is because the cheapest NBN plan may not always be the best broadband option.

With most households on the National Broadband Network there's a range of cheap options available for everyone. However, purchasing a cheap broadband plan on price alone could leave you with a plan that's not fast enough for your household or could come with data caps that leave you without broadband halfway through the month.

Gold laptop

When comparing broadband plans you will need to consider:

NBN DEALS: Many broadband providers offer sign-up deals for new customers which can reduce the cost of your NBN plan for the first 6 months or so, or special NBN deals for seniors or pensioners. It’s important to keep an eye on your NBN plan since most these days come with no lock-in contract, which means if you’re truly looking for the cheapest NBN plan, you have the opportunity to shop around and find better deals once your sign-up offer has ended.

NBN SPEED: When choosing cheap NBN plans, finding the best speed for your household can be tricky. With the NBN there are multiple speed categories you can choose from, starting at NBN 12, up to NBN Ultrafast. Depending on your household’s needs, one NBN speed tier might be better than the other. While single-person households might do well with NBN 12, bigger households should consider NBN 50 or NBN 100 to ensure enough bandwidth for every device.

In the table below we explain how to compare cheap NBN plans with speed in mind:

DATA: Most NBN plans come with unlimited data, but you need to beware as there are still a few providers offering NBN 12 with capped data limits. Unless you’re looking for very little data (Between 10GB and 100GB per month) or rarely use the internet at home, the cost of an NBN plan with a data cap isn’t worth it. Most capped data plans cost around the same as a plan with unlimited data.

CONTRACT: If you’re unsure about signing up to a fixed contract, many suppliers offer no-contract NBN plans. However, keep in mind that some no-contract NBN plans will come with higher upfront costs which would otherwise be waived if you signed up for a 12-month contract.

MODEM: Most ISPs let you bring your own (BYO) modem which is one easy way to save on internet. However, if you don’t have an NBN-enabled modem, you can usually purchase a modem from your broadband provider for around $100 to $150.

BUNDLES: There are different ways to bundle home services and save money. Some providers will give you a discount if you bundle together your mobile phone plan and home internet plan. Larger home utility companies, such as Origin Energy, offer both energy tariffs and home broadband at a discount when you bundle together. If you’re looking to bundle a home entertainment package such as Fetch TV, there are many providers offering entertainment bundles with their home broadband plans at a reduced rate.
