With most of Australia on the National Broadband Network, there is more choice than ever before when it comes to your broadband provider. If you’re looking for a cheap internet plan, no matter what internet speeds your household needs, you can find a comparison of the top 5 cheapest NBN plans and providers, by speed, by reading more below.

Cheapest NBN 12 plans

NBN12, or NBN Basic, is the most basic NBN speed tier. NBN12 only offers maximum speeds of 12Mbps, not much faster than the old ADSL broadband connections, but for small households who don’t use a lot of internet NBN12 is a budget-friendly broadband choice. These days there aren’t many providers offering this NBN speed tier, and some providers only offer NBN12 with data caps, but if you’re looking for simple home broadband to check emails and browse social media, you can find the cheapest NBN12 plans below.

NBN25 offers faster speeds than NBN12/Basic and is a great, budget-friendly choice for smaller households who like to go online frequently and want an upgrade from the old ADSL speeds. With NBN25 you can have a couple devices connected, browse social media, check your emails, and stream standard quality videos, which makes NBN25 a good choice for the average internet-using household. Cheapest NBN Ultrafast (NBN 1000) plans

NBN Ultrafast, or NBN 1000, is the fastest available residential NBN speed tier and not for the faint of heart. With maximum download speeds of 1000Mbps (one entire gigabit!) NBN Ultrafast can keep up with almost any residential home’s broadband needs including households with multiple online gamers, ultra HD/4K streamers, and intense work-from-homers. The downside of NBN 1000? It can get very expensive and isn’t available for all NBN connections, nor does every ISP offer it but if you’re willing to pay the price and have a FTTP or HFC connection, you can find the cheapest NBN Ultrafast plans below.

How to compare the cheapest NBN plans

There’s more to choosing an NBN plan than just price, though the price is an important factor. The cheapest NBN plan might not always be the best broadband option; it might not be fast enough for your household and might come with data caps that leave you without broadband halfway through the month. When comparing broadband plans you will need to consider:

NBN speed: Choosing the best speed for your household can be tricky. With the NBN there are multiple speed tiers you can choose from, starting at NBN12, up to NBN Ultrafast. Depending on your household’s needs, one NBN speed tier might be better than the other. While single-person households might do well with NBN12, bigger households should consider NBN50 or NBN100 to ensure enough bandwidth for every device. If you’re considering the fastest NBN speed tiers; Superfast and Ultrafast; you need to ensure you have the right type of NBN connection.

Data: Most NBN plans come with unlimited data, but there are still a few providers offering NBN12 with capped data limits. However, unless you’re looking for very little data (Between 10GB and 100GB per month) and really don’t use the internet at home that much, the cost of these plans isn’t much less than a plan with unlimited data.

Contract: If you’re not sure about signing away your life for a full year with an ISP, there are plenty of no-contract NBN plans to choose from. It’s important to note, however, that some no-contract NBN plans will come with higher upfront costs which would otherwise be waived if you signed up for a 12-month contract.

Modem: Most ISPs let you bring your own (BYO) modem if you have one that is already NBN-enabled. However, if you don’t have an NBN-enabled modem, you can usually purchase one outright from your chosen broadband provider, usually between $100 to $150 upfront.

Bundles: There are different ways to bundle home services. Some providers will give you a discount if you bundle your mobile phone plan and home internet plan, while bigger home utility companies, such as Origin Energy, offer both energy tariffs and home broadband at a discount when you bundle together. If you’re looking to bundle a home entertainment package such as Fetch TV, there are many providers offering entertainment bundles with their home broadband plans at a reduced rate.
