Origin Moving House & New Origin Connections

You can arrange your move with Origin up to one business day in advance if you organise your move online before 1pm the previous business day.

For new and existing Origin customers, continue below to find out how to set up electricity and gas in your new home with Origin Energy.

Origin NBN When setting up your Origin connection in your new home, you can choose to organise your broadband connection at the same time by signing up for Origin NBN to get $10 off your broadband bill every month.

New Customers: Origin Energy Connections

Moving house is the perfect time to shop around for a better energy deal, and maybe you’re considering switching to Origin Energy.

The process for switching energy providers when moving house is really no different than signing up for your current address. Simply put in the address of your new home, and when you go through the Origin Energy sign up process you’ll be asked whether:

  1. You are a new or existing customer, and
  2. Whether you want to switch providers at your existing address or get connected at a new address

Once you give Origin Energy your details, you’ll need to tell Origin Energy about the property you’re moving to. This includes:

  • Your connection date
  • Whether there is free and clear access to your meter
  • Whether there are any planned electrical works
  • Whether anyone who will be living on the property is on life support

Current Customers: Origin Energy Connections

If you’re an existing Origin Energy customer who’s moving house and want to keep your current Origin Energy service, you can organise your move using your Origin Energy Account online.

You can arrange your move with Origin Energy as far in advance as you would like, and it’s generally a smart idea to plan your energy connection in your new home quite far in advance to avoid any last minute problems. However, same-day connections might be possible.

To organise an out-of-hours or same-day Origin Energy connection call 13MOVE (13 66  83).

Otherwise, Origin Energy electricity connections can be arranged for the next business day if you let Origin Energy know the day before, 1PM Monday to Friday. Origin Energy gas connections can take up to three business days.

Origin LPG Call Origin LPG at 13 35 74 to move your Origin LPG connection to your new address.

Origin Energy Connection & Disconnection Fees

Origin Energy connection fees as well as Origin disconnection fees vary, depending on your circumstances.

Your energy service (electricity, gas, or LPG), the state you live in, whether or not you have a smart meter, and your energy distributor all determine the connection or disconnection fees you might have to pay when moving house. It’s important to remember that Origin Energy does not set these fees, they’re set by your energy distributor and Origin merely passes on the cost to you.

What is Origin Connect?

Origin Connect is for homeowners, builders, and other contractors who need to apply for a new Origin Energy connection or change in supply.

Origin Connect can be used to request:

  • A new Origin connection (for new builds where there was not a previous energy supply)
  • A change of energy supply (add solar or change your tariff type)
  • To remove an energy supply

Customers and clients can register for Origin Connect online, or use the Origin Connect forms to apply for a change.

Origin Moving House & Urgent Connections

While it’s best to plan your move well in advance, this might not always be possible.

If you need an urgent Origin connection at your new address, you have a few options:

  • New and existing customers can get a next-business-day electricity connection when they organise their move online before 1pm the previous day, Monday to Friday.
  • Call 13MOVE (13 66 83) for a same-day Origin connection. Additional fees may apply.

Origin Connections & Origin Moving House FAQ

What is the Origin Energy Move Promise?

The Origin Energy Move Promise guarantees that your energy service will be switched on in your new home the next business day, when you book your move online before 1pm during the week. If Origin Energy does not have your power service connected, you can claim up to $400 per day in credits until your energy is switched on.

Do I need to be at my new address when getting connected?

Usually, you don’t need to be at your address for a new connection with Origin Energy to take place, unless you live in Queensland. If you do need to be home for the connection to occur, Origin Energy will let you know while keeping you updated on the status of your connection.

If you live in Queensland, however, a Visual Safety Inspection is usually required unless your house already has power. If you’re booking your move in Queensland, you’ll need to choose a five hour window for the inspection to take place.

Can Origin Energy electricity and gas get connected at the same time?

Electricity can be connected the next day, or in some instances, same-day. However, natural gas can take up to three business days to get connected. If you need a more urgent connection, call Origin Energy at 13 MOVE (13 66 83).

How much notice does Origin Energy need when I move?

You can arrange your connection as far in advance as you would like, either by arranging your move online as a new Origin Energy customer or via Origin Energy My Account as an existing customer. You can also request an urgent connection outside of standard connection times by calling 13 MOVE (13 66 83).

How do I disconnect my old address?

If you’re moving to a new address, your old property won’t automatically be disconnected. If you’re an existing Origin Energy customer, you can arrange your disconnection via your Origin Energy My Account. If you have a different energy provider, get in contact with them to arrange a disconnection.

Disconnections can occur early in the morning so it’s best to arrange for your disconnection the day after you move, in case you need power on your moving day. You will need a final meter reading at your old address through your energy distributor, which requires a 3-4 business day notice.

I’m moving to an apartment which Origin Energy supplies, how can I sign up?

If you’re moving to an apartment that is supplied by Origin Energy (also known as an embedded network), you will need to sign up to Origin Energy online using their centralized electricity account signup page. Just fill out the required form, and wait for Origin Energy to get in touch with you.
