Organizing Your Move with Origin Energy

Moving can be stressful, but organizing your new home’s power doesn’t need to be. Many energy providers have dedicated teams for moving house, and Origin Energy is no different. Whether you’re a new or existing Origin Energy customer, you can make sure your new home has electricity and gas the day you move in, by reading more about the Origin Energy moving process below.

New customers moving with Origin Energy

If you’re moving home, and want to switch energy providers to Origin Energy, the process is really no different than signing up at your current address. Just choose the Origin Energy plan you want online, let them know you’re a new customer and select “Get connected at a new address”.

You’ll be prompted to give Origin Energy some details about your new property. These include:

  • Letting them know if there will be safe and clear access to the meter on the day of the connection
  • Whether there are any electrical works planned before the connection date
  • If there is any risk to accessing your meter
  • If anyone planning to live on the property uses life support equipment

After, all you will need to do is select how you would like to pay your Origin Energy bills. You can decide to set up direct debit with a bank card or bank account now, or opt to pay the bills yourself when due. You’ll also be able to add your concession card details now, or later, choose whether you want to receive bills and letters by email or post, and if you’re interested in solar panels. Once you’ve completed all these steps, Origin Energy will connect your house on the day you chose.

Disconnecting your current address If you’re not an Origin Energy customer, contact your current provider to organize the disconnection from your current address for when you move.

Existing Origin Energy customers moving home

If you’re already an existing Origin Energy customer, who’s moving home and want to keep your Origin Energy service for your new address, you can organize your move through Origin Energy My Account.

Once you’ve organized the move either online or via the Origin App, keep an eye out for a confirmation email. During the moving process, you’ll be able to track the status of the connection online and via SMS or email. If you need to disconnect your current address, you can do that as well via the Origin Energy My App.

Origin connection and disconnection fees

Origin Energy connection and disconnection fees vary, depending on whether you need gas or electricity connected, the state you live, and your energy distributor. Origin Energy doesn’t set these moving fees, they’re set by your energy distributor and Origin Energy merely passes the cost onto you.

If you have an urgent connection, there’s a couple ways you can contact Origin Energy to get your new address connected in time for your move.

  • For next-business-day electricity connection you can organize your move online before 1pm, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays)
  • Outside of weekdays before 1pm, or for same-day connections, call 13 MOVE (13 66 83) for help. Additional moving fees might apply

Origin Energy moving house FAQ

Do I need to be at my new address when getting connected?

Usually, you don’t need to be at your address for a new connection with Origin Energy to take place, unless you live in Queensland. If you do need to be home for the connection to occur, Origin Energy will let you know while keeping you updated on the status of your connection.

If you live in Queensland, however, a Visual Safety Inspection is usually required unless your house already has power. If you’re booking your move in Queensland, you’ll need to choose a five hour window for the inspection to take place.

Can Origin Energy electricity and gas get connected at the same time?

Electricity can be connected the next day, or in some instances, same-day. However, natural gas can take up to three business days to get connected. If you need a more urgent connection, call Origin Energy at 13 MOVE (13 66 83).

How much notice does Origin Energy need when I move?

You can arrange your connection as far in advance as you would like, either by arranging your move online as a new Origin Energy customer or via Origin Energy My Account as an existing customer. You can also request an urgent connection outside of standard connection times by calling 13 MOVE (13 66 83).

How do I disconnect my old address?

If you’re moving to a new address, your old property won’t automatically be disconnected. If you’re an existing Origin Energy customer, you can arrange your disconnection via your Origin Energy My Account. If you have a different energy provider, get in contact with them to arrange a disconnection.

Disconnections can occur early in the morning so it’s best to arrange for your disconnection the day after you move, in case you need power on your moving day. You will need a final meter reading at your old address through your energy distributor, which requires a 3-4 business day notice.

I’m moving to an apartment which Origin Energy supplies, how can I sign up?

If you’re moving to an apartment that is supplied by Origin Energy (also known as an embedded network), you will need to sign up to Origin Energy online using their centralized electricity account signup page. Just fill out the required form, and wait for Origin Energy to get in touch with you.
