Origin Disconnection

Are you looking to disconnect your energy service with Origin Energy? Whether you are moving house or switching to a different energy provider, you will have to disconnect your gas and/or electricity contracts. Disconnection can be a stressful and confusing process, but with this step-by-step guide, you'll be able to navigate it with ease. We've also included some common FAQs about disconnection, as well as information on how to cancel an Origin energy account.

How to Disconnect Origin Energy

Disconnecting your energy service with Origin Energy is a very straightforward process. To ensure a smooth transition, you can follow these steps:

  • Contact Origin Energy: In order to start your disconnection process, you will need to inform Origin Energy. There are multiple ways to initiate your disconnection:
    • If you are an existing Origin Energy customer, you can easily book a disconnection in My Origin Account or on the Origin app. Once you are in your account, head to the menu, and choose disconnect my property.
    • You can also initiate the disconnection process by calling Origin Energy customer service at 1300 132 480 so they can arrange a disconnection with your distributor.
    • If you need to disconnect services at your previous address, you will need to fill out an Origin Energy disconnection form and Origin will disconnect the electricity or natural gas for you.
  • Book a disconnection date: After you have contacted Origin Energy, you will need to schedule a disconnection date. You can choose to keep your old address active for as long as you like, and close it in My Account when the timing suits you. Keep in mind that you will need to provide at least 3-4 business days' notice for a disconnection. Once you select a date, your energy distributor will come out to do a final meter read. You can choose to disconnect your meter from 7am on the day of your choosing, but consider choosing the day after you move, in case you need to use energy on the day of your departure.
  • Provide a Final Meter Reading: On the date of disconnection, a representative will come to your property to take a final meter reading. If you're not available, they will leave a card requesting you to provide your final meter reading. You will need to ensure that they have access to your meter, which is usually done by leaving your gate or meter box unlocked. If you are unable to provide access to your meter, you will need to arrange for someone to be present during the disconnection. Please note that this final meter reading will be used to calculate your final bill.
  • Pay Your Final Bill: After the final meter reading, you will receive your final bill from Origin Energy. This bill will include any outstanding charges, as well as any disconnection fees that you must pay. You will need to pay this bill in full before your disconnection is finalised. If you are unsure about your outstanding balance, you can call Origin customer service for further assistance.

Origin Energy Disconnection Fee

Your energy service (electricity, gas, or LPG), the state you live in, whether you have a smart meter, and your energy distributor all determine the amount of disconnection fees you might have to pay. Origin Energy may also charge you a disconnection fee if you cancel your energy plan before the end of your contract.

Electricity Meter

Origin disconnection fees typically range from $8 to $66. It's always best to check your contract or contact Origin customer service to find out the exact amount. It is important to note that disconnection fees are determined by your energy distributor, not by Origin, and they will appear on your final energy bill.

When it’s time to disconnect from Origin Energy, you will find the exact amount that you will be charged. The prices are also listed in the table below according to the state in which you live and the type of service you are disconnecting:

Whether you are required to pay Origin disconnection fees depends on a variety of factors, including:

  • Your location and energy distributor
  • Whether you have a smart meter for a remote meter reading
  • Whether this meter read is outside normal hours
  • Whether it’s a gas or electricity connection

Disconnect Origin Business

If you're a business customer and would like to disconnect your energy service with Origin Energy, you can arrange to move your business or disconnect your business energy supply by contacting the Origin business team on 133 835 (Monday–Friday, 8 am–6 pm AEST). It is recommended that you contact Origin at least 3 days before your account needs to be closed. You can also close your business' energy account online via My Account.

If you have a complex energy setup or multiple Origin business accounts, it's recommended to contact Origin Energy customer service to get more information about the disconnection process.

When Origin closes your business account, all regular deliveries under that account will be stopped. If you have another account with Origin, you will still be able to place orders via that account. If your business has been sold, the new owners will need to set up a new account and can compare Origin energy plans to find the plan that best suits their needs.

If you need to move your business account to another address, you can organise your move online in 3 simple steps:

  • Compare energy plans for your new address
  • Once you’ve chosen a plan, Origin will require your new business address and move in date. Origin will then organise the connection at your new property. You will be able to check the status of your new connection on your My Account Dashboard.
  • Close the account for your old business location by going to Disconnect my property in your Origin login account.

Origin NBN When setting up your Origin connection in your new home, you can choose to organise your broadband connection at the same time by signing up for Origin NBN to get $10 off your broadband bill every month.

Disconnection Fees for Origin Business

Origin Energy also charges disconnection fees for business customers. While these charges are similar to the charges for residential customers, there are some differences worth pointing out. The amount you pay depends upon the type of plan you have (electricity, gas, or LPG), the size of your business, the state you live in, and who your energy distributor is.

It is important to note again that the disconnection fees are determined by your energy distributor, not by Origin, and they will appear on your final energy bill. Please review the prices listed in the table below according to the state in which you live and the type of Origin Energy business service that you are disconnecting:
