If you’re receiving unwanted calls from energy providers, or any other telemarketing service, you might want to consider adding your phone number to the Do Not Call Register. The Do Not Call Register is a free and voluntary service by the Australian Media and Communications Authority that allows private people and certain authorised officers to register phone and fax numbers to reduce the number of unwanted telemarketing calls they receive. Find out about the Do Not Call Register by reading more below.

What is the Do Not Call Register

The Do Not Call Register is a database that allows you to reduce the number of telemarketing calls and marketing faxes you receive.

The Do Not Call Register is under the responsibility of the Australia Media and Communications Authority (ACMA). Any member of the general public, authorised officer of a government agency, or authorised officer of a business can register a valid phone number. Individuals and organizations can register their Australian telephone, mobile, or fax numbers to this list in order to opt out of unsolicited telemarketing calls and faxes.

If you’re getting unwanted calls from energy providers in Australia, the Do Not Call Register can reduce how many you receive.

Still Getting Unwanted Calls on the Do Not Call Register?

If you’ve been on the Do Not Call Register for more than 30 days, and are still getting unwanted calls, you can submit a complaint with the Do Not Call Register.

Generally, the Do Not Call Register won’t handle individual cases but might use your complaint as part of a greater investigation or for future compliance actions.

If you’re not on the Do Not Call Register you can still submit a complaint for the following telemarketing scenarios:

  • You get a telemarketing call before 9am or after 8pm during the week
  • You get a telemarketing call before 9am or after 5pm on a Saturday
  • You get any telemarketing call anytime on a Sunday or a national public holiday
  • You get a telemarketing call and the caller refuses to give you information required as part of the Industry Standard

You can submit a complaint anonymously, with any contact details provided only to be used by the ACMA. When submitting a complaint online you will need to provide information about your phone number, the caller details, and information about the call incident that occurred.
