EnergyAustralia: Moving House as New Customer

If you haven’t compared energy plans for a while, moving house is the perfect time to shop around for a better energy deal.

If you’ve decided that EnergyAustralia is a good choice for your new home, the process for switching to EnergyAustralia while moving house is not much more different than switching at your current address.

When you sign up for EnergyAustralia while moving house, you just need to determine the following:

  1. Whether you want to switch to EnergyAustralia at your current address or get connected at a new address, and
  2. Whether you are an existing EnergyAustralia or a new EnergyAustralia customer, and
  3. Your EnergyAustralia connection date

After that, you just need to give EnergyAustralia some personal details and identification including:

  • Name, date of birth, and contact details
  • Valid identification
  • Your billing and correspondence preferences
  • Additional account holders
  • If you want to set up a direct debit as your chosen EnergyAustralia bill payment method
  • Any energy concessions or rebates you are eligible for

If you have solar panels installed on your new property, you will need to contact EnergyAustralia directly to arrange your moving house connection.

Switching to EnergyAustralia when you move? Remember to contact your previous energy provider to disconnect your old address. It’s best to choose a disconnection date after you move, as disconnections can occur as early as 7am and you might need electricity on the day of your move.

EnergyAustralia: Moving House as an Existing Customer

If you’re an existing customer moving house with EnergyAustralia you have two ways to arrange your move and keep your energy provider.

 EnergyAustralia My Account
Use your EnergyAustralia login to access My Account. Navigate to “Moving Home” and then “Move My Service”. This is the easiest way to arrange your move with EnergyAustralia, as it’s already connected to your account information.

 Sign up for EnergyAustralia online
If you prefer, or don’t have an EnergyAustralia login, you can arrange your EnergyAustralia moving house service online. Just enter your new address like you would when signing up as a new EnergyAustralia customer and provide your account number, postcode of current address, and valid identification.

EnergyAustralia will arrange both the connection at your new address, as well as the disconnection at your old property.

If you need to disconnect your old address, contact EnergyAustralia at least 3 business days prior to ensure adequate time for the EnergyAustralia moving house team to arrange your move.

Electricity meter

EnergyAustralia Connection & Disconnection Fees

When you move house, you may need to pay an EnergyAustralia disconnection fee or other charges related to your energy meter.

These fees are generally set by your energy distributor, not EnergyAustralia which merely passes the cost on to you. Meter Fees can include:

  • Solar Meter Installation Fee: To replace your current meter with one suited for solar energy export
  • Disconnection Fee: Vacating your current address and disconnecting the electricity or gas supply. This may also include a meter reading for your final energy bill.
  • Reconnection Fee: Moving into your new property and setting up your new electricity or gas connection.
  • Special Meter Read Fee: Have your meter read outside of the typical quarterly schedule at your request.

If you have a smart meter, your energy distributor might be able to read it remotely which often reduces or waives some of these fees.

Unfortunately, this is usually an unavoidable cost of moving house, and fees vary depending on the type of energy connection (electricity or gas), your energy distributor, and the type of meter service that needs to be done.

What is the EnergyAustralia Power Guarantee?

EnergyAustralia guarantees that the power will be on in your new home the day you move in.

With their power on the day you move guarantee, if your energy is not switched on at your new address by the time you move in you will get $100 credit on your next EnergyAustralia bill. You just need to make sure to give EnergyAustralia at least 1 business days’ notice to connect the new address.

The EnergyAustralia power on guarantee does not apply if:

  • The residence has not had electricity connected for 12+ months
  • You provided the wrong information regarding the date or connection address
  • Safety reasons prevented the safe connection of electricity to the premise
  • Circumstances beyond EnergyAustralia’s control (ex: weather or natural disaster) caused delays in the connection

If you need to make a power on guarantee claim, you can contact EnergyAustralia by calling 133 466.

EnergyAustralia Connections: Meters, New Connections & Disconnections

Moving house into an established property with an existing energy connection is pretty simple, just contact EnergyAustralia to arrange your move.

However, meters for new builds and changes to existing connections take a bit more time and work. You will need to complete the appropriate application or form for new connections and disconnections, which can be done online or by downloading the PDF form.

Depending on the type of connection (gas or electricity) and your location, the required form will differ. You can find more information about EnergyAustralia new connections and disconnections at energyaustralia.com.au/home/electricity-and-gas/new-meters-and-installations.

EnergyAustralia Urgent Connections

It’s important to organise your move as far in advance as possible to avoid any confusion or stress, and this is no different for energy connections.

While the EnergyAustralia moving house team recommends at least two business days to arrange a connection at your new address, you can also request an urgent connection if necessary.

You can contact EnergyAustralia for an urgent connection at:

EnergyAustralia Moving House FAQ

My new property has solar panels, what do I do?

If your new property has solar panels, you’ll need to call EnergyAustralia directly to organize the move. You can contact EnergyAustralia by calling 13 34 66

I gave EnergyAustralia three business days but my property doesn’t have power!

If you’ve arranged your move with EnergyAustralia and your property isn’t connected to power, call their moving team directly by calling 1800 702 684. EnergyAustralia offers its Power On guarantee. If your power isn’t connected the day you move in, you can claim $100 credit on your next EnergyAustralia bill. Consider sharing your experience in an Energy Australia review.

Do I need to be at my new property when getting connected?

Usually, you don’t need to be at your new property when getting it connected to power as long as there is safe and clear access to the meter and the main switch is turned off. If there’s an issue, EnergyAustralia will get in touch.

If you live in Queensland, however, you will need to be present during the connection as a Visual Safety Inspection also needs to occur. Make sure you have a chunk of time blocked off for this to be done.

How much notice does EnergyAustralia need to organize my connection?

You can arrange your connection as far in advance as you want, but EnergyAustralia needs at least three business days to get your new property connected. For urgent connections, you can contact EnergyAustralia by calling 1800 702 684 before 1pm.

How do I disconnect my old address when moving home?

You need to get in touch with your current energy provider to disconnect your old address when moving home. If this is EnergyAustralia, they’ll organize it for you when you’re setting up your move with them.
