Moving is stressful, and making sure you’re all set with getting power to your new property is just one of many things you need to organize before you move. Thankfully, EnergyAustralia makes it easier to get your new property connected, without all the hassle. No matter if you’re a new EnergyAustralia customer, looking to connect a new address, or an existing customer that just needs to switch your current plan to your new place, EnergyAustralia can help. For all the information you need to make your move with EnergyAustralia as smooth as possible, keep reading below.

New customers moving house with Energy Australia

New EnergyAustralia customers can organise their move in the same way they would sign up for EnergyAustralia for an existing address. Just let EnergyAustralia know it’s a new home and the date you’re moving, and they'll make sure you have power on the day you move in.

To sign up to EnergyAustralia for your new home you need to:

  1. Compare EnergyAustralia plans, and choose the one that best fits your needs and lifestyle
  2. Tell EnergyAustralia the connection is at a new address and your move-in date
  3. Let them know if you’re the homeowner or a renter and if the property has solar
  4. Provide your personal details and a valid form of ID

When signing up for a new EnergyAustralia account you can also opt to add an additional account holder, setup direct debit, and a concession card if you have one.

Existing EnergyAustralia customers moving house

If you’re already an existing EnergyAustralia customer, you can organize your move a few different ways. You just need to give EnergyAustralia at least three business days notice, to ensure your new home is connected the day you move in.

  1. Log into your EnergyAustralia My Account, click “Moving Home” and then “Move my service”
  2. Organize your move online, much like you would as a new EnergyAustralia customer. Just indicate you’re an existing customer, not a new one.

Urgent connections Connections usually take three business days to organize. However, if you need an urgent connection at your new address, call EnergyAustralia’s moving team directly at 1800 702 684 and they may be able to speed things up a little bit.

Disconnecting your old home when moving with EnergyAustralia

If you’re moving home, you need to arrange a disconnection of power at your old address, as it isn’t automatic. For existing EnergyAustralia customers, this can be done when you organize your move either online or over the phone. EnergyAustralia will arrange the disconnection for you.

If you’re a new EnergyAustralia customer, you will need to contact your old energy provider directly and let them know you’re moving and need a disconnection.

Your disconnection is done by your energy distributor, not your energy provider, and you need to give them at least three business days notice to disconnect your old property. It’s recommended to arrange the disconnection the day after you move, as disconnections can occur as early as 7am on the day you choose.

EnergyAustralia connections and disconnections rates

When arranging a disconnection and reconnection while moving home, you will probably encounter some fees. These fees are not set by EnergyAustralia, or your current energy provider, but rather the energy distributor for your area. Here, you can find a list of disconnection and reconnection fees for your distribution network. If you have a smart meter, these fees might be lower.

New connections and new meters

A new meter and new connection application is for when you’re building a new home. New connections often take a bit more time than simply reconnecting the property but you can easily apply for the new meter online.

Just choose the fuel type for the connection, the type of property, and address, and fill out the required details. If you require a solar connection with your new meter (with three or more solar panels) contact EnergyAustralia’s solar team by calling 1300 137 473 or shoot them an email at solarconnections@energyaustralia.com.au.

EnergyAustralia moving house FAQ

My new property has solar panels, what do I do?

If your new property has solar panels, you’ll need to call EnergyAustralia directly to organize the move. You can contact EnergyAustralia by calling 13 34 66

I gave EnergyAustralia three business days but my property doesn’t have power!

If you’ve arranged your move with EnergyAustralia and your property isn’t connected to power, call their moving team directly by calling 1800 702 684. EnergyAustralia offers their Power On guarantee. If your power isn’t connected the day you move in, you can claim $100 credit on your next EnergyAustralia bill.

Do I need to be at my new property when getting connected?

Usually, you don’t need to be at your new property when getting it connected to power as long as there is safe and clear access to the meter and the main switch is turned off. If there’s an issue, EnergyAustralia will get in touch.

If you live in Queensland, however, you will need to be present during the connection as a Visual Safety Inspection also needs to occur. Make sure you have a chunk of time blocked off for this to be done.

How much notice does EnergyAustralia need to organize my connection?

You can arrange your connection as far in advance as you want, but EnergyAustralia needs at least three business days to get your new property connected. For urgent connections, you can contact EnergyAustralia by calling 1800 702 684 before 1pm.

How do I disconnect my old address when moving home?

You need to get in touch with your current energy provider to disconnect your old address when moving home. If this is EnergyAustralia, they’ll organize it for you when you’re setting up your move with them.
