Compare 4G and 5G Home Wireless Broadband Plans in Australia

Wireless broadband

Home wireless broadband is a great alternative to the NBN when it comes to delivering internet to your home. With its simple installation, you can get wireless internet anywhere your phone can connect to the 4G or 5G network. Find out more about home wireless broadband, including new high-speed 5G home wireless broadband, and compare wireless broadband plans available in Australia to decide which home broadband is best for you, by reading more below.

What is home wireless broadband?

Wireless home broadband uses the same mobile network as your phone to deliver the internet to your home or business. Unlike the NBN or ADSL, wireless broadband doesn’t require any special setup or a technician to install anything into your home; you can simply plug in your wireless modem and get connected.

Wireless broadband is a great choice for households or businesses who either can’t connect to the National Broadband Network yet, or don’t want to. Since wireless broadband delivers the internet through the mobile network you don’t need to worry about things like the distance between your house and the exchange, as with ADSL, nor do you need to worry about “peak busy hours” or “evening speeds” like the NBN.

Wireless broadband is also a great option for renters, or people who frequently move house since the wireless broadband modem doesn’t require any special setup or installation. You can simply unplug, pack up, and plug it back in wherever you are.

How fast is home wireless broadband?

Prior to the rollout of 5G, home wireless broadband was only available on the 4G network. This meant that, on average, most home wireless broadband plans would get you speeds around 12Mbps, similar to NBN Basic 12 or ADSL2+. For the average, light-internet user, this is great for some internet browsing, basic streaming, and some social media use. However, for multiple devices and heavy internet use, 4G isn’t enough.

With new 5G home wireless broadband plans now available in some parts of Australia, you could potentially reach download speeds of up to 1Gbps, much faster than the majority of NBN plans. However, 5G is not yet available everywhere.

Should I switch to home wireless broadband?

Home wireless broadband is certainly an attractive choice for those who either can’t connect or don’t want to connect to the NBN. 4G wireless broadband is still slower than most NBN plans and often comes with capped data at either 200GB or 500GB per month, making it a good choice for smaller households and low-internet users who like to browse social media or stream standard videos. If you’re one of the lucky few who live in the newly rolled out 5G network, however, 5G home wireless broadband plans usually come with unlimited data and faster download speeds than most NBN plans, usually at a cheaper price than most NBN plans.
