4G and 5G Home Wireless Broadband Plans in Australia

Wireless broadband

Home wireless broadband is the simple alternative to the National Broadband Network, simply plug in the wireless broadband modem and connect your home and devices to the mobile network. With home wireless broadband, there isn’t any need for technicians or installation, which is great for renters and people who frequently move. If you’re interested in connecting your home to the mobile network with 4G or 5G home wireless internet, you can compare broadband plans and providers below.

There aren’t that many providers offering 4G home wireless broadband, and there isn’t that much difference between them. Most home wireless broadband plans run between $50 and $70 per month, depending on how much data you want, and you just need to decide:

  • Contract or no-contract: Most no-contract wireless broadband plans make you pay for a modem upfront while choosing a contract plan usually includes a modem at no extra cost.
  • Data allowance: Home wireless broadband plans usually come with 200GB of data or 500GB of data though some providers offer slightly different allowances.
  • Modem: Your modem is usually included if you choose a wireless broadband plan on a contract, while you’ll often need to pay for your modem upfront if you choose a no-contract service.

Exetel 4G home wireless broadband

Exetel only offers one home wireless broadband plan, with 250GB of data every month. Simply choose whether you want a month-to-month service, and pay full price for your home wireless broadband modem, or a 12-month contract which means your modem comes at half-price.

In addition, your home wireless broadband modem is provided to you for free, from Vodafone. The only catch? While their home wireless broadband plans are technically no-contract, if you leave before 36 months you need to pay off the rest of the modem. Compare 5G home internet plans

The 5G mobile network is being rolled out across Australia, bringing with it faster-than-ever mobile broadband speeds. If you’re lucky enough to live in one of the major cities that already have 5G coverage, you might be able to access one of the few 5G home wireless broadband plans currently available.

While all three mobile network operators are rolling out their own 5G networks, Optus, as well as SpinTel and most recently Yomojo on the Optus network, are the only providers currently offering residential 5G wireless internet. Unlike 4G home wireless broadband plans, which come with slower speeds and capped data, 5G home wireless broadband plans come with unlimited data, and average evening speeds of up to 240Mbps making it faster than all but the fastest NBN speed tiers.

Below you can find the few 5G home internet plans currently available in Australia, and as the 5G network rollout continues across the country you can expect to see even more 5G home wireless broadband plans available in the near future.

What is home wireless broadband?

Home wireless broadband is a way to connect your home, and all its internet-enabled devices, to the internet by way of the mobile network. Unlike the NBN, or older technologies like ADSL, which rely on fibre optic and copper cables to connect your home to the broadband network, home wireless broadband is, as the name suggests, wireless. All you need to do is plug in the home wireless modem (no installation or technician necessary), and you’re connected.

Home wireless broadband speeds

Home wireless broadband is seen as the alternative to the NBN, but how do its speeds compare? While the technology and provider you choose will affect your internet speed, typically, 4G home wireless broadband can get you around 12Mbps download speeds. This makes home wireless broadband comparable to the old ADSL connections, and the NBN12 speed tier and is adequate for basic browsing and light video streaming in standard quality. However for better quality streaming, gaming, and more intense internet usage, 4G home wireless broadband might not be enough.

Capped download speeds Some home wireless broadband providers (particularly MVNOs) only offer capped download speeds, so check to make sure you have access to the full mobile network with whatever provider you choose.

If you’re one of the lucky ones to live in a city that has Optus 5G network coverage and can sign up for one of the available 5G home wireless broadband plans, you’ll see broadband speeds comparable to the fastest NBN speeds - upwards of 250Mbps download speeds. This means you can use the mobile broadband network to game online, stream in Ultra 4K and HD, video conference without lag, and more across multiple devices.

Should I switch to home wireless internet?

While home wireless is seen as an alternative to the NBN, it isn’t without limitations.

  • Speed: Unless you’re lucky to have access to 5G home wireless broadband plans, 4G home wireless isn’t as fast as most NBN services.
  • Data: 4G home wireless plans often come with data caps, which might not be enough for heavier internet users.
  • Cost: For the speeds and data you get, home wireless broadband is generally more expensive than fixed-line broadband connections.
  • Coverage: Home wireless depends on the mobile broadband network, and if you don't get good mobile coverage in your home you probably won’t get decent home wireless coverage.
This isn’t to say home wireless broadband is a bad choice for home internet. Home wireless speeds are usually adequate for the average internet user, you might not get HD quality video when watching Netflix and you might not be able to do heavy online gaming, but for standard quality streaming and browsing, it’s usually just fine. If you’re a frequent mover, live in a large household and need your own broadband connection without sharing, or don’t yet have an NBN connection or don’t want one, home wireless broadband can be a great way to connect to the internet quickly and easily.
