Energy Providers in QLD

As stated, Queensland is divided into two distinct regions when it comes to the energy market. For those living in Brisbane and the surrounding area, full retail contestability has been implemented, allowing residents to choose their energy provider. This makes it easier than ever to find the best electricity provider Brisbane and secure the cheapest energy provider in QLD for your needs.

However, for those in regional and rural Queensland, electricity is provided and supplied through Ergon Energy. While Ergon Energy remains the sole provider in these regions, Brisbane residents have multiple alternatives to compare electricity QLD and enjoy competitive deals.

See all Energy Providers in Queensland

Ergon Energy in Rural & Regional QLD

Ergon Energy is the historic energy provider in Queensland, and still the only provider and distributor available to residents living outside of South-East Queensland. Ergon Energy’s rates are set by the Queensland government, to keep rising electricity prices manageable for the residents of the area. If you're comparing options in urban areas, remember that Brisbane offers several alternatives, including top-rated providers that may be the best electricity provider QLD.

Since Ergon Energy isn’t only the historic energy provider but also the supplier—meaning they are who you call for any power outage, electricity emergency, or other problems with the supply of energy to your home—their service remains vital for regional residents.

  • 13 22 96 general emergencies or outages
  • 13 60 70 if you’re experiencing any shocks or tingles from an appliance or water tap

Energy Distributors in QLD

Queensland energy customers have their energy supplied to them by two electricity distributors and two gas distributors.

For those in regional and rural areas, electricity is supplied by Ergon Energy, while residents in South-East Queensland receive their electricity through Energex. For natural gas customers, Allgas Energy and Australian Gas Network QLD supply the state. Understanding these networks is key when you compare electricity QLD options and decide on the best provider for your household.

Solar Rebates QLD

Currently, the Queensland government itself does not offer any solar rebates.

However, if you’re interested in investing in solar energy, there are a few schemes available in Australia to help offset the cost of installing solar panels onto your home.

  1. Small-scale Technology Certificates: A federal scheme that gives a point-of-sale discount on small-scale renewable energy generation projects such as solar panels, or small-scale wind or hydro.
  2. Solar feed-in tariffs: A rate paid to you, by your energy company, for unused generated solar energy sent back to the grid.

Home Energy Emergency Assistance Scheme

The Home Energy Emergency Assistance Scheme is a one-off emergency payment to assist Queensland households experiencing a sudden, short-term, financial crisis and need help paying their energy bills. It’s a one-off payment of up to $720 every two years.

To be eligible for this emergency assistance payment, you must be the one responsible for paying the outstanding bill, though the bill doesn’t need to be in your name. In addition, you must meet the following:

  • Hold a current concession card; or
  • have an income equal to or less than the Australian Government’s maximum income rate for part-age pensioners
  • be part of your energy provider's hardship program or payment plan

In order to start the Home Energy Emergency Assistance Scheme application, contact your energy provider so they can start the process and consider your eligibility.

Queensland Solar Feed-in tariff

If you have, or want to invest in, solar energy for your home it's important to consider the solar feed-in tariff with your energy plan.

When your solar PV system generates electricity, most of that is used to power your home. Any excess, however, is usually sent back to the grid (unless you have battery storage). Your electricity provider will usually pay you for the energy sent back, known as the solar feed-in tariff or FiT, which comes in the form of a credit off your energy bills. Including attractive solar feed-in tariffs in your comparison can help you secure the best electricity deals QLD overall.

It may be necessary to have a smart meter installed in order to receive a feed-in tariff.

If you live in regional Queensland, within the Ergon Energy distribution network, there is a minimum flat-rate feed-in tariff of 9.369c/kWh which is set by the government. Those who live in South East Queensland, Brisbane, or the other areas within the Energex distribution network, will usually find a voluntary feed-in tariff of around 10c/kWh though some retailers might offer even higher.

Here you will find the highest solar feed-in tariffs available in Brisbane as of March 2025. Some solar feed-in tariffs have eligibility requirements in order to access the higher rates. Depending on your energy plan and size of solar PV system, you might be better off choosing a lower FiT with a higher discount.

Your energy distributor is the one in charge of maintaining the energy supply, fixing outages and other issues, and actually getting the energy supply to your home. Whether you’re with the best electricity provider QLD or another, knowing your distributor’s emergency contacts is essential.
