How to Compare Electricity Plans in Queensland

Queensland is the second-largest territory in Australia and the third one in population, so it’s no surprise that QLD is also one of the most important energy markets in the country.

As with any of the other States, Queensland's energy market works like a tango between the energy distributors and the energy providers (also called retailers).. In order to find the cheapest electricity plan in QLD, you have to be familiar with the Default Market Offer (DMO)

Queensland Default Market Offer (DMO) & Reference Price

The reference price, or Default Market Offer (DMO), is the price set by the government by distribution network to protect and inform consumers with regards to electricity pricing. The DMO has two main functions which are:

  1. Protect consumers who don’t want to compare and switch providers, from paying exponential energy rates. In this case, the DMO acts as a capped price on the energy market.
  2. Inform consumers who wish to compare and switch providers, by giving them a reference and how much less (or in some instances more) an energy providers’ plan is.
Queensland Reference Price
Distribution Network Annual Estimated Usage DMO on a Flat-Rate Tariff
Energex (QLD) 4,613kWh / year $1,969 / year

Valid December 2023.

If you live outside of the Energex distribution network, you have your energy rates set by Ergon Energy and the energy regulators. In this instance, the reference price does not apply to you.

  • Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card (and receive the War Widow/er Pension or special rate TPI Pension)
  • Asylum seeker status—residents will need to provide their ImmiCard details (Electricity Rebate only)

In addition, for the gas and electricity rebates, Queensland residents must be the energy account holder and either live alone or share their principal place of residence with (only) any of the below:

  • Your spouse
  • Other people who hold a Services Australia or Department of Veterans' Affairs Pensioner Concession Card or Queensland Seniors Card
  • Other people wholly dependent on you
  • Other people who receive an income support or families payment from Services Australia who do not pay rent
  • Other people who receive an income support payment from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and who do not pay rent
  • Other people who live with the cardholder to provide care and assistance, and who do not pay rent

In order to apply for the Queensland energy rebates, you will need to contact your energy provider directly. You can apply through your energy retailer either over the phone, or ask them to send an application form. While applying for the Queensland gas and electricity rebates, you will need to provide copies of your energy bills and concession card.

Solar Rebates QLD

Currently, the Queensland government itself does not offer any solar rebates.

However, if you’re interested in investing in solar energy, there are a few schemes available in Australia to help offset the cost of installing solar panels onto your home.

  1. Small-scale Technology Certificates: A federal scheme that gives a point-of-sale discount on small-scale renewable energy generation projects such as solar panels, or small-scale wind or hydro.
  2. Solar feed-in tariffs: A rate paid to you, by your energy company, for unused generated solar energy sent back to the grid.

Home Energy Emergency Assistance Scheme

The Home Energy Emergency Assistance Scheme is a one-off emergency payment to assist Queensland households experiencing a sudden, short-term, financial crisis and need help paying their energy bills. It’s a one-off payment of up to $720 every two years.

To be eligible for this emergency assistance payment, you must be the one responsible for paying the outstanding bill, though the bill doesn’t need to be in your name. In addition, you must meet the following:

  • Hold a current concession card; or
  • have an income equal to or less than the Australian Government’s maximum income rate for part-age pensioners
  • be part of your energy provider's hardship program or payment plan

In order to start the Home Energy Emergency Assistance Scheme application, contact your energy provider so they can start the process and consider your eligibility.

All QLD Energy Providers & Distributors

The energy retailers stand between the distributors and the consumers, they are the ones offering you the market plans and processing your energy bills.

Luckily for South East Queensland Aussies, QLD has no shortage of electricity retailers to choose from, all with their unique plans, rates and features.

Gas in Queensland works in a similar way to electricity, in fact, most gas retailers are also electricity retailers, so it’s worth looking for bundles when going with any of these providers.

Below is a drop-down list with all electricity & gas providers in Queensland as well as all of the distributors in QLD:

List of Electricity Providers QLD

List of Gas Providers QLD

List of Dual Fuel Providers QLD

There are only 7 energy companies in Queensland that offer both gas and electricity, also known as dual fuel providers.

  • QLD Dual Fuel Providers
  • AGL
  • Alinta Energy
  • CovaU
  • Discover Energy
  • GloBird Energy
  • Origin Energy
  • Real Utilities
  • Red Energy

Real Utilities is the newest dual fuel provider in Queensland with just over 200 customers.

List of Energy Distributors QLD

The energy distributors build and support the energy infrastructure and supply chain. They are the ones sourcing the energy for your house.

These are the different electricity & gas distributors in Queensland:

QLD Electricity & Gas Distributors
QLD Energy Distributors Type of Energy
Energex (SEQ) Electricity
Ergon Energy (regional QLD) Electricity
Essential Energy (southern QLD) Electricity

Queensland LPG vs Natural Gas Some QLD households don’t have access to a gas pipeline that would source their natural gas, which is why liquified petroleum gas is also a popular choice for gas in QLD. If you don’t have access to gas by pipeline, you need to order LPG gas bottles (usually 45kg each).

Solar Power in Queensland

Queensland is known as “The Sunshine State”, and for good reason.

With over 750,000 small-scale solar PV systems installed on rooftops across the state, it’s leading the charge in solar penetration. Queensland Solar Feed-in tariff

If you have, or want to invest in, solar energy for your home it's important to consider the solar feed-in tariff with your energy plan.

When your solar PV system generates electricity, most of that is used to power your home. Any excess, however, is usually sent back to the grid (unless you have battery storage). Your electricity provider will usually pay you for the energy sent back, known as the solar feed-in tariff or FiT, which comes in the form of a credit off your energy bills.

It may be necessary to have a smart meter installed in order to receive a feed-in tariff.

If you live in regional Queensland, within the Ergon Energy distribution network, there is a minimum flat-rate feed-in tariff of 9.369c/kWh which is set by the government. Those who live in South East Queensland, Brisbane, or the other areas within the Energex distribution network, will usually find a voluntary feed-in tariff of around 10c/kWh though some retailers might offer even higher.

Here you will find the highest solar feed-in tariffs available in Brisbane as of December 2023. Some solar feed-in tariffs have eligibility requirements in order to access the higher rates. Depending on your energy plan and size of solar PV system, you might be better off choosing a lower FiT with a higher discount.

Highest Solar Feed-In Tariffs Brisbane
Provider Minimum FiT (c/kWh) Maximum FiT (c/kWh)
Origin Energy 5c 20c
Solar panels must be purchased through Origin Energy
EnergyAustralia 6.6c 15c/kWh on the ReAmped Solar Plan
Ovo Energy 7c 14c
AGL 5c 12c
GloBird Energy 5c 11c

*Must have solar & battery storage for enhanced FiT. Some eligibility requirements might be necessary and not available to everyone. Valid December 2023.

QLD Energy FAQ

How do I Compare Energy Plans in Queensland?

It can be difficult to compare electricity in QLD across all the available providers, options, plans, discounts, and deals on the market.

When looking for providers, you should prioritise retailers offering a low supply charge if you don’t generally use much energy, because this is a charge you are going to be paying regardless of how much energy you consume. As its name suggests, the supply charge is what you have to pay just for being connected to the energy network.

The usage rate is what you pay for the energy that you use, and it’s shown in your bill as (c/kWh). In other words, the usage charge reflects the exact amount you pay for each unit of electricity & gas your household consumes every day.

This is arguably the most important number you should consider when looking for an energy plan. If you tend to consume a lot of electricity and gas, you want the usage charge to be as low as possible.

What is the Average Cost per kWh in Queensland?

Electricity usage charges are calculated in kilowatt-hours (kWh), and depending on the plan, tend to be between 18c/kWh and 25c/kWh in Queensland. Be sure to compare the usage rates when chooosing an energy plan or provider, as this is the amount that you will be paying daily, for each unit of electricity. When considering the cost per kWh, the lower the charge, the better.
