VoIP and NBN Bundles

The landline is slowly becoming a thing of the past, as more and more Australians forego the home phone in exchange for their mobiles. With mobile phone plans getting cheaper, and most including unlimited national calls and text, and even unlimited international calls, it makes sense that many don’t want to pay for another home service. However, this does not mean you can’t find a home phone plan if you still want a landline. These days, almost all home phone plans utilise a different technology than traditional landlines, called VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol, and while the technology may be different the result is still the same – a reliable phone connection for your home. If you’re looking to get a landline with your home broadband plan, you can find VoIP and NBN bundles by reading more below.

Getting rid of your landline? If you're considering tossing your home phone service, compare prepaid and postpaid mobile phone plans to discover the best mobile phone plan for you or look for a new NBN and mobile phone bundle.

VoIP + NBN Bundle FAQ

What is VoIP? How Does VoIP Work?

Traditional landlines, that use copper wire and a telephone exchange, using electricity to carry sound from start to finish. With the rollout of the National Broadband Network, however, VoIP transforms this into data packets which are then sent over the internet rather than through a telephone exchange.

How Much Data Does VoIP Use?

VoIP uses relatively little data to use, around 13MB per hour of calling, and only requires a download/upload speed of 100Kbps (though 3Mbps is recommended). Given that all NBN plans can reach at least 12Mbps and most come with unlimited data, this shouldn’t be a problem for most households.

Is a Paid or Free VoIP Phone Service Better?

It’s important to note the difference between paid and free VoIP services. Paid VoIP bundles are usually best reserved for a home phone or landline whereas free VoIP services (such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, or Telegram) are usually reserved for your mobile phone or over the computer. With free VoIP services, you should also know that some may still require a paid subscription to be able to call certain phone numbers.

How Do I Set Up My VoIP Phone?

Unlike old landlines, your handset will need to plug directly into your NBN modem. While this is simple enough to do, this might mean your landline is not in the most accessible place in your home. Unfortunately, once you switch to the NBN your old telephone wall socket will no longer connect to the telephone exchange.

Do I Need a Home Phone with NBN?

You do not need a home phone with the NBN and more and more people are using their mobile phone as their main line of communication. With most mobile phone plans offering unlimited national calls and text, and oftentimes including additional international minutes, a landline is no longer necessary like it once was. If you’re thinking of getting rid of your landline completely, you can compare mobile plans and deals, find cheap mobile plans with unlimited national call and text, discover broadband plans without a landline, and even bundle your mobile phone and internet plans to score a discount.

Do I Need a Special Handset with VoIP?

Usually, your old handset should be compatible with VoIP and plug directly into your NBN modem. The only exception are “pulse dialling” phones such as rotary phones.

What Type of Modem Do I Need for VoIP?

All NBN modems should support VoIP, though if you’re bringing your own modem you might need to configure it yourself. If you purchase your modem through your NBN provider, it should come preconfigured for your VoIP service - simply plug in your handset!
