QEnergy

QEnergy ceased trading after entering voluntary administration. Affected customers were automatically transferred to a new retailer appointed by the Australian Energy Regulator under the Retailer of Last Resort scheme. You can also choose a different retailer with no exit fees. This page is for information about the former company only.

QEnergy was privately owned by ION Limited, an Australian company based in Brisbane. It was primarily a business energy retailer, especially for Victorian businesses, but also offered residential electricity plans to certain customers in NSW, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia. It did not supply gas.

Towards the end QEnergy only offered standing offer plans equal to the reference price, available to existing customers. Estimated annual residential bills were around $1,512 in NSW, $1,293 in Victoria, $1,620 in Queensland and $1,840 in South Australia. Earlier plans such as Home Your Way and the Victoria-only Mini Me are no longer available. See the rates section for the breakdown.

QEnergy SmoothPay averaged your annual usage into even monthly payments so you could budget and avoid seasonal bill shock, with QEnergy monitoring and adjusting if you were in debt or credit. Payments could be made by credit card over the phone, direct debit, BPAY, cheque by post or in person at a Post Office. See the billing section for details.

Reviews were favourable for a retailer, averaging about 3.6/5 across the major review platforms (3.6 on TrustPilot from over 300 reviews, 4.3 on ProductReview from a small sample). Customers praised the cheap rates and helpful service; the main gripes were limited online features and occasional trouble reaching agents.

You will already have been moved to a replacement retailer, but that plan may not be the cheapest for your home or business. Compare active retailers that supply your address against the reference price, and switch with no exit fees if you find a better deal.
