Optus Sport is Closing Soon: Everything Football Fans Need to Know

Big news for Australian football fans: Optus Sport, the long-time home of English and international football streaming, will shut down its digital service in Australia from 1 August 2025. All current football coverage—including the Premier League and other top competitions—will move exclusively to Stan Sport.

Why is Optus Sport Closing?

Optus Sport has played a major role in bringing football to Aussie screens since its launch in 2016. Due to recent changes in broadcast rights and strategic shifts, the service will cease operating, with Stan Sport now becoming Australia’s official broadcaster for many of the world’s favorite football competitions.

Which Football Leagues Are Moving to Stan Sport?

From 1 August, Optus Sport will no longer host live games, highlights or replays. Instead, you’ll find the following football content exclusively on Stan Sport:

  • English Premier League (EPL)
  • Emirates FA Cup
  • J League (Japan)
  • National Women’s Soccer League (USA)

What Do Current Optus Sport Subscribers Need to Do?

If you want to keep watching your favourite teams and leagues, you’ll need to switch to Stan Sport. Optus is directly contacting affected customers with detailed instructions on how to sign up and activate your exclusive offer.

  • If you currently pay $9.99 per month for Optus Sport, you can continue to enjoy the EPL, FA Cup, J League and NWSL on Stan Sport at the same price for the next three football seasons.
  • Eligible Optus Sport customers will get bonus access to Stan Premium and Stan Sport (full package) at no extra cost, from August up to 8 January 2026.
  • After this period, you can either continue with Stan Premium/Sport at an additional monthly charge, or revert to a dedicated $9.99 football-only package.

Annual Optus Sport subscribers will receive a pro-rated refund for remaining subscription time after the closure, and are invited to take up the new Stan Sport offer at the same $9.99 monthly rate.

To redeem these deals, make sure you sign up to Stan with your Optus-linked email address. If you used Optus SubHub, you can still move to Stan Sport using your email, but Stan Sport subscriptions won’t be managed via SubHub going forward.

What About Existing Stan Sport Customers?

If you already have a Stan Sport account, you don’t need to do anything. You’ll find all the football content previously available on Optus Sport added to your current Stan Sport subscription automatically from August 1.

Over the course of a year, an Optus Sport monthly subscription works out to be roughly $300. You can save $80 on your Optus Sport subscription if you purchase an annual pass and pay one lump sum of $229.00.

However, we must admit that both of these prices are steep when you compare them to the $6.99 /month (Total: $84 /year) Optus customers pay when you bundle Optus sport with your mobile or internet plan.

Optus has a wide range of plans cutting-edge plans, including Optus 5G.

If you are interested in bundling your plans to get Optus Sport, Optus NBN internet plans starts at $79 /month and Optus Mobile plans start at $30/month. Another added benefit of going with a bundle like this is that Optus internet plans will also have a Netflix subscription included for free.

Unfortunately, Optus Sport does not offer a free trial anymore. There used to offer a free 14-day trial in the past, which is no longer available.

Instead the program has a select few interviews and highlights which are free to watch. Occasionally ‘Free Seat Matches,’ or a game that anyone is allowed to watch free of charge is available through the app.
