What is Social Energy?

Social Energy is an electricity provider specialising in solar energy & feed-in tariffs.

They landed on Australian shores in 2019 but have been working with solar and electricity since they were founded in 2015 in the UK, where they have brought solar panels & batteries to over 500 households.

A quick overview of the Social Energy site will give you an idea of the brand’s motto and business model, which is best described as sustainable electricity. Social Energy is not a one-size-fits-all company and they don’t market themselves that way either. This means that, instead of aiming to provide a general product that would satisfy all kind of customers, they have decided to focus in a specific product curated to a particular type of customer. Social Energy puts great effort into providing green energy through cutting-edge technology and specialised plans focused on solar energy.

These are the states where Social Energy operates:

What We Like about Social Energy

What we like most about Social Energy is their commitment to make sustainability their business model.

To fully take advantage of their plans, you need to meet very specific conditions, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Social Energy has decided to ditch the pursuit of general electricity plans and focuses instead in curating the best product for customers that want to go all-in with solar.

If you are interested in just cheap rates, you will find better options out there, but Social Energy's feed-in tariffs and solar technology infrastructure is a breath of fresh air for anyone looking for something different.

Is Social Energy Right for Me?

Social Energy may not be for everyone. Their plans are curated toward customers who want solar to be an essential part of their electricity management.

However, if you are that type of customer, Social Energy solar tariffs may help you save a substantial amount on your electricity bills.

Social Energy - Pros & Cons
PROS CONS
  • Battery bank & solar panels required for the premium solar tariffs
  • Not much choice with only one plan
  • Long delays in installation time

Our Verdict about Social Energy If you already have a solid solar infrastructure or consider investing in it, then Social Energy is arguably one of the best options in the market. They possess cutting-edge solar technology and unique partnerships with brands like Duracell & SolaX Power that allow them to provide the latest solar hardware and software in the market. On top of that, they offer solar feed-in tariffs that none of their competitors can match and can help you to substantially reduce your electricity bill.

Social Energy is built with solar customers in mind and you won’t find better feed-in tariffs in the market. If you cannot meet the criteria to enjoy the premium feed-in tariffs, we recommend you further research other options before committing to Social Energy.

Social Energy Reviews from Customers

Social Energy reviews are overly positive, especially for an energy provider. As of July 2022, this is how customer rated Social Energy across major review sites:

Future X Power Reviews
Review Site Score NÂş of Reviews
Trustpilot 4.1 / 5 509
Google Reviews 4 / 5 30

Positive Social Energy reviews tend to highlight the company’s informative and helpful support, usually regarding problems related to connection problems with the Social Energy box that Social Energy uses to monitor the customers’ energy usage. Other comments also commend the Social Energy installation service.

Here is an example of a verified 5-star Social Energy review from Craig Arrowsmith:

After a lengthy delay to have the battery and solar system installed, it was the work of Jason King and Rebecca Smith who finally got things moving. They were both highly efficient and a pleasure to deal with. The installers, Michael and Tom, arrived when they said they would and completed the installation without any problems. Their workmanship is a credit to them both. I couldn’t be more satisfied to this point. I hope the system delivers the desired outcomes and my high electricity bills become a thing of the past.

Many customers are satisfied with Social Energy's installation of their solar panels. However, many reviews also complain about bad customer service and point to significant delays (sometimes several months) in the installation of Social Energy systems.

Here is another example of a verified 1-star Social Energy review from Stickyweb:

Absolutely abysmal Customer Service - After 6 months of delays our Battery Installation was scheduled for Feb 2022 ... And then cancelled. Social Energy blamed the contractor ... 3 months later I have written off this company as a terrible example of the dodgy operators prevalent in our Solar Installation industry.

As mentioned, Social Energy has managed to gather strong feedback. However, Social Energy reviews speak about both the Australian and the UK service. There aren't any major differences in the reviews for both Australian and British customers, but we encourage you to keep reading other Social Energy reviews to get a better picture of what you might expect with Social Energy services in Australia.

Social Energy Plans - Better Together

The Social Energy Flagship is their one and only offer, the Better Together plan.

The Better Together plan works like your average electricity retailer plan, offering a fair discount off the reference plus, but with the unique feature of also providing a premium solar feed-in tariff of 40c / kWh, the highest of the market.

However, the conditions to be eligible for the premium feed-in tariff are quite specific.

To be able to get the Social Energy Better Together premium tariff you must have:

  • Solar Panels installed at your property
  • A solar battery bank that can be accessed remotely

If you don't have a solar battery, you can still apply for the Better Together plan, but you will need to install (or have installed) solar panels and the feed-in tariff will drop substantially to the 6c / kWh, so you will get a more average deal.

Better Together is primarily meant for customers who already meet the conditions required to adapt to Social Energy's hardware & software infrastructure (a.k.a. the Social Energy Hub) as Social Energy utilises a remote-control system that connects to your battery.

What is the Social Energy Hub?The Social Energy hub is Social Energy's online system that uses smart software to monitor your energy usage.

Do not worry, Social Energy does not plan on virtually taking over your household any time soon, they will just monitor your energy usage. Customers that meet all criteria and are connected to the Social Energy Hub will be able to get 40c / kWh of feed-in tariffs.

This is almost 4 times the amount you will get from the average provider, who typically offers around 6c/kWh to customers with solar panels that reduce their reliance on the grid.

If you dont meet these requirements, Social Energy also provides a convenient solar battery consulting service with a list of CEC-approved installers. They can help you plan your solar installation process which will help you be eligible for the 40c/kWh feed-in tariff.
