Why most dishwasher advice gets it wrong
Dishwasher buying guides fixate on star ratings, brands and features, implying the machine you buy is what sets the running cost. It mostly isn't. Two dishwashers of similar efficiency cost about the same to run; what actually moves the bill is the cycle you choose and when you run it, because both decide how much hot water and how much expensive electricity you use.
The other common miss is the eco-mode confusion. People avoid eco because it takes longer and assume longer means more energy. It's the opposite: eco saves energy precisely by heating less water and running gently for longer. Time is not the cost here, hot water is.
How dishwasher running costs work
Nearly all of it comes down to hot water, and the rate you heat it at.
It's the hot water, not the motor
Heating water is energy-hungry; spinning the pump and spray arms is not. So roughly 80% of a cycle's energy goes on bringing water up to temperature. That's why the eco cycle is cheaper: it uses less water at a lower temperature and simply washes for longer to get the same result. Longer cycle, lower energy. The "intensive" or "auto" programs cost more because they heat more water hotter.
Full loads and timing
A cycle costs much the same whether the machine is half-full or full, so running it full halves the cost per dish. And because the cycle uses the same energy whenever it runs, shifting it to a cheap off-peak window (or midday solar) on a time-of-use tariff lowers the cost with zero change to the wash. Done full, on eco, on off-peak, a dishwasher is one of the cheapest appliances in the house, and it beats hand-washing the same load.
Eco vs intensive, peak vs off-peak

How Aussies overpay without realising it
The longer cycle uses less hot water, which is where the cost is. Slow is cheap here, not expensive.
A near-empty cycle costs almost the same as a full one. Waiting for a full load halves the cost per dish.
The after-dinner habit lands the cycle in the dearest window. A delay timer to off-peak fixes it for free.
Rinsing dishes under hot water before loading can use more hot water than the cycle saves. Scrape, don't rinse.
The insider insight: the cost is in the settings, not the sticker
The dishwasher is a neat case study in where appliance running costs actually live. The marketing is all about the machine, stars, brands, wash zones, but two similar dishwashers cost roughly the same to run. The real variable is the program and the timing, both entirely in your hands and both free to change. Eco versus intensive can cut energy by a third; peak versus off-peak can more than halve the cost of whatever energy you do use.
That's the opposite of the fridge, where the appliance choice dominates because it runs constantly. For an appliance you run in discrete cycles a few times a week, your behaviour, full loads, eco mode, off-peak timing, swamps the hardware. The savvy move is to stop shopping for a cheaper-to-run dishwasher and start running the one you have on eco, full, and off-peak.
