Compare every electricity plan in one place

For every plan we take its daily supply charge and its single-rate usage rate for your distribution network, then apply the standard formula: (supply charge × 365 days) + (usage rate × your yearly kWh). All prices are GST-inclusive and pulled live from the energy market, so the ranking reflects what each plan would genuinely cost your household over a year.

Your retailer buys the use of the poles and wires from a distribution network (DNSP), and those network charges are built into the rate you are offered. New South Wales alone has three networks (Ausgrid, Endeavour and Essential Energy), and the same plan can cost noticeably more on one than another. Picking your network is what makes the comparison accurate rather than a rough average.

As a rough guide, a 1–2 person apartment uses around 3,500 kWh a year, a 3–4 person house around 5,000 kWh, and a large 5+ person home 8,000 kWh or more. Your actual usage is on your latest bill, usually shown as an average daily use in kWh. The closer you get this number, the more accurate your ranking.

The ranking compares single-rate (flat) plans, the fairest like-for-like basis when you do not have detailed half-hourly data. If you have a smart meter, can shift usage to off-peak, or have solar panels, a time-of-use plan or a strong solar feed-in tariff could beat the flat-rate winner. Use the ranking as your shortlist, then check those options on the retailer pages.
